Honokaa Jazz Band Plays at Capitol

The award winning Honokaa High School Jazz Band toured the neighbor islands this month. One of the stops they made was at the State Capitol where the band played a short concert of jazz and pop standards to an appreciative audience consisting mainly of legislators, staff and people just passing by. The bnad received a proclamation from Governor David Ige and a legislative certificate from State Rep. Mark Nakashima.

The Honokaa High School Jazz Band has been led over the decades now by longtime director Gary Washburn who is well known in the community of Honokaa, all over the state and in the world. The jazz band is nominated this year for a Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Jazz Album of the Year. They previously won a Grammy Award back in 2011.

Many jazz band members have continued with careers in music.
