Hurricane Lane Falls Short of Honolulu
Just about everything in Honolulu was shut down on Friday, August 24 in preparation for Hurricane Lane. In the end, the gigantic storm was downgraded from a deadly CAT 5 to Tropical Storm status as wind shear tore in apart between August 23 and 24.
Businesses, schools, parks and other institutions on Oahu were closed on Friday. People stocked up on supplies a few days before. Staples such as bottled water, canned food, non-perishable packaged snacks, and fuel were among the many items snatched off the shelves by hoards of shoppers who went into a panic buying binge.
Honolulu escaped major damage. There was no significant rainfall or strong winds to be had.
The islands of Maui and Hawaii suffered the most as rain dumped more than 30 inches on the Big Island and a huge brush fire near Lahaina attributed to strong winds and downed powered lines destroyed several homes and vehicles there.
Winds were not very significant.
