August 20, 2022: Hawaii Files Photo of the Day<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Yes, as the main title says, the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii<\/strong> <\/a>at Fort DeRussy in Waikiki is closed. The museum closed in February<\/strong> <\/a>to undergo a major renovation that will cost $3 million. The private non-profit museum “is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. It is a non-federal entity and not part of the Department of Defense or any of its components and has no government status.”<\/p>\n

I last visited the museum in 2016 and found it an interesting stop. It features displays of items from the two World Wars as well as the Korean and Vietnam era conflicts. It is filled with history and interesting displays. My friend Jerry Stanfield<\/strong><\/a> knew some of the people operating the museum, and when we visited in 2016 he donated a model Jeep to them.<\/p>\n

Admission to the museum was free in 2016 but donations are encouraged.<\/p>\n

The army tanks from the U.S. and Japan as well as a couple of cannons are still accessible and are on display just outside the museum. The renovation is scheduled to be completed later this year with a re-opening planned for December.<\/p>\n
