King Kamehameha III<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Our roving photographer Nathan Nitta<\/strong> stopped at Thomas Square yesterday morning (March 15) to capture images of a celebration honoring King Kamehameha III<\/strong> on the anniversary of his birthday. A bit of historic background on Hawaii’s third reigning monarch from the Wikipedia<\/strong> website:<\/p>\n

Kamehameha III<\/strong> <\/a>(born Kauikeaouli) (March 17, 1814 \u2013 December 15, 1854) was the third king of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1825 to 1854. His full Hawaiian name was Keaweawe\u02bbula K\u012bwala\u02bb\u014d Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa<\/strong> and then lengthened to Keaweawe\u02bbula K\u012bwala\u02bb\u014d Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa Kalani Waiakua Kalanikau Iokikilo K\u012bwala\u02bb\u014d i ke kapu Kamehameha<\/strong> when he ascended the throne.<\/p>\n

Under his reign Hawaii evolved from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy with the signing of both the 1840 Constitution, which was the first Hawaiian Language Constitution, and the 1852 Constitution. He was the longest reigning monarch in the history of the Kingdom, ruling for 29 years and 192 days, although in the early part of his reign he was under a regency by Queen Ka\u02bbahumanu and later by Ka\u02bbahumanu II. His goal was the careful balancing of modernization by adopting Western ways, while keeping his nation intact.<\/p>\n

Last year, the City & County of Honolulu renovated Thomas Square Park, bordering King Street, Ward and Beretania Avenues and Victoria Street. Upon completion a new statue of Kamehameha III was unveiled over a landscaped area dedicated to the monarch. From Wikipedia, “On July 31, 2018, a 12-foot bronze statue of Kamehameha III and a flagpole flying the Hawaiian flag was unveiled at Thomas Square<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in a ceremony honoring the 175th anniversary of the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty in 1843.”<\/p>\n

Thomas Square is significant to Hawaii’s history being the location where the British government relinquished a short occupation of the kingdom back to its rightful entity. A flag ceremony was held in the location of Thomas Square in 1843 between British officials and King Kamehameha III.<\/p>\n

With its recent renovation, Thomas Square is now a landscaped park where residents can enjoy passive relaxation and small gatherings in a green area dominated not only by Kamehameha’s statue, but also a large banyan tree and a memorial fountain donated to the city by the Outdoor Circle in 1932.<\/p>\n

Before the renovation, the park had a somewhat checkered recent history having for several months being an encampment for the De Occupy Honolulu movement in 2011. Homeless people have also set up illegal encampments in the park at times.<\/p>\n

Thomas Square is on the\u00a0National Register of Historic Places<\/a><\/strong>. Yesterday’s birthday observance was the first ever for Kamehameha III. It will probably become a new annual tradition.<\/p>\n

Several groups participated in the birthday ceremony complete with several music, speeches, birthday cakes and flower leis.<\/p>\n
