{"id":1820,"date":"2017-07-28T10:00:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-28T20:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.hawaiifiles.com\/?p=1820"},"modified":"2017-07-28T10:00:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-28T20:00:48","slug":"mayor-signs-bill-to-ban-plastic-bags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.hawaiifiles.com\/?p=1820","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Signs Bill to Ban Plastic Bags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Among the 4 bills signed into law this month, the mayor decided to ban plastic bags.<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.honolulu.gov\/docushare\/dsweb\/Get\/Document-196101\/DOC007%20(9).PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Ordinance 17-37 (Bill 59)<\/strong><\/a> will put a permanent ban on plastic bags given or sold to customers at the check-out line at business establishments.<\/p>\n<p>There will be exemptions on plastic bag use within a store or other business for specific uses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bags used by customers inside a business to package loose items,<br \/>\nsuch as fruits, vegetables, nuts, ground coffee, grains, candies, or<br \/>\nsmall hardware items:<\/li>\n<li>Bags used to contain or wrap frozen foods, meat or fish, flowers or<br \/>\npotted plants, or other items to contain dampness;<\/li>\n<li>Bags used to protect or transport prepared foods, beverages, or<br \/>\nbakery goods;<\/li>\n<li>Bags provided by pharmacists to contain prescription medications;<\/li>\n<li>Newspaper bags for home newspaper delivery:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the bill to get the entire list of plastic bag exemptions.<\/p>\n<p>This is the latest law signed by the mayor that is anti-business and anti-consumer.<\/p>\n<p>Another bill signed by the mayor into law is one that bans the use of electronic devices (<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.honolulu.gov\/docushare\/dsweb\/Get\/Document-196183\/DOC007%20(14).PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ordinance 17-39 \/ Bill 6 &#8211; 2017<\/strong><\/a>) by pedestrians while in a crosswalk. It is similar to a law that bans motorists from using a device while driving.<\/p>\n<p>The latest list of bills signed into law by the mayor is listed below:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.gov\/component\/acymailing\/?subid=38653&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=17464&amp;mailid=1125&amp;Itemid=1511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 Ordinances<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ordinance 17-37\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Relating to bags provided to customers.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinance 17-38 &#8211; Relating the maintenance of channels, streambeds, streambanks and drainageways.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinance 17-39 &#8211; Relating to mobile electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinance 17-40 &#8211; Relating to the Land Use Ordinance.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinance 17-40 [Bill 79 (2015), CD2] \u2013 To amend Chapter 21, Revised Ordinances of Honolulu 1990, as amended (The Land Use Ordinance), relating to the Land Use Ordinance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Among the 4 bills signed into law this month, the mayor decided to ban plastic bags.
