Offers Scholarships

(PRESS RELEASE)

The Hawaii Island AJA Veterans Legacy Association announced it is offering up to two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue their post high school education this fall. These scholarships are sponsored by the Hawaii Island AJA Veterans Legacy Association, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community organization dedicated to honoring and perpetuating the legacy of the Americans of Japanese ancestry veterans during World War II.

Applicants must be a senior at any Hawaii island public or private high school and must enroll full time at any accredited college or university in the state of Hawaii for the 2019-2020 academic year, registering for 12 credits or more. (Online educational programs ineligible.) In addition to the application and other documents, an essay of no more than 1000 words is required describing the significance and role of Americans of Japanese ancestry in the 100thInfantry Battalion, Military Intelligence Service or the 442ndRegimental Combat Team in World War II (focusing on a minimum of one) and their legacy. Scholarships to be applied to tuition, room and board, books, travel or other expenses at the college or university of the applicant’s choice.

Application forms and instructions are available at the counselor offices at Hawaii island public and private high schools. The deadline for the 2019-20 scholarships is Saturday, April 20, 2019; applications, including the essay, must be postmarked by this date.
