King Kamehameha the Great Honolulu City Council Meeting – June 7, 2017.

The Honolulu City Council will be holding its monthly council meeting on Wednesday June 7 at the City Council Chambers in Honolulu Hale starting at 10:00 a.m. Several tax and spend bills are on the agenda, mostly to fund the $10+ billion rail project.

The council will be taking up measures on the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) Operating Budget for the Fiscal Year July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 (Bill 32) and several other budget relating items. Bill 68 will propose to increase admission fees at the Honolulu Zoo, a motor vehicle weight tax increase (Bill 10), and raising parking rates and adjusting times  (Bill 12) for metered parking stalls.

A number of events for the month of June has been announced by the Mayor’s Office on Culture & Arts. Among the events:

The 47th Annual Aloha Show – May 23 to June 15 at Honolulu Hale Courtyard, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Free art exhibit.

Oncology on Canvas, Art – Honolulu Hale Courtyard, June 20 to July 6. Free.

Water Conservation Week Art & Poetry Contest; June 6 – 22 Kapolei Hale Courtyard 1000 Ulu‘ohi‘a St 8 am – 4:30 pm

Hawai‘i Harmonica Society’s 20th Annual, Harmonica Recital & Concert – Saturday June 3,  10:00 am to 12 Noon; Mission Memorial Auditorium, 550 S King St. Free.

Kuhio Beach Hula Show, various days, Waikiki Hula Mound, free, 6:30 – 7:30 pm.

Royal Hawaiian Band Performances, various venues

Lei Draping, Honolulu at the King Kamehameha Statue on King St. 3:00 pm. • King Kamehameha Day Parade – Starts at Iolani Palace / Richards Street and goes through Waikiki and ends at Kapiolani Park. Free. 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Bands, pa’u riders, floats. Polynesian Voyaging Society Hokulea canoe returns from its around the world trip on June 17. Magic Island, Ala Moana Park – Starting at 8:30 a.m. More info: Hokulea.com • Several public events are scheduled through the month after the canoe’s arrival.

Honolulu’s Honest, Diverse DIY Scene

It’s a warm Friday night in Honolulu’s Chinatown, and local punk band Smoke Free Armstrong are playing their final show to a packed crowd at the Downbeat Lounge, a venue that, in recent years, has been ground zero for the city’s DIY punk scene. Between songs, guitarist and singer Steve Tanji grabs the mic to offer a sincere tribute. “I just want to thank you guys, from the bottom of my heart, for letting us play for you,” he says. The crowd of kids gathered in front of the stage cheer in response. “We’ve been playing for two years, and I want to thank you all for coming out and supporting the scene.”
